After a few months of relative peace and quiet in the Q3iCTF community, it’s time to get things moving again, and since the all-weapons peeps had their fun with a draft league (the CTFDL) earlier this year, some of the same folks that brought you GotRail? 3 decided to try the concept out with Instagib CTF.
If you’re not familiar with a draft league, I’ll give a quick explanation of how it works. Basically, it’s exactly what the word “draft” implies….the admins select team captains, and then those team captains (in an order that will be randomly determined) draft players for their teams from the entire list of people that have signed up to play. It can be a nice change of pace from all the usual clans that play in every tourney, and allows for a bit of parity…when the season starts, any team could finish on top!
With that formality out of the way, we now present you with the Q3iCTF Draft Thing. (No, I didn’t think of the name. :D)
Starting now at this location (which will migrate to q3ictf.com as soon as the rest of the site is ready) signups have opened for all those that are interested in participating. Signups will be open until the end of the night on September 16th, 2004. If you don’t signup on the site by midnight that night, you don’t play. That gives you two weeks, so sign up now, and tell everyone you know that enjoys Q3iCTF.
Allow me to stress one thing: do NOT sign up if you will not be able or willing to be active the ENTIRE season. We’re only going to allow the league to be so big, and we would prefer not to have people taking up spots who do not wish to participate 100% of the time. Depending on how many signups there are, there will be a waiting list of people who do not get drafted, and those people, at the discretion of the team captains and admins, will be used to replace anyone on any team that is not actively participating.
A few notes about the signup form…
The username/handle should be the name you intend to play under…and you should also use the name you are best known by, as the captains picking the teams might overlook you if they don’t recognize your name.
Make sure you use a working email address when you sign up. The system will send you a confirmation email. If you don’t receive it, notify an op in #q3ictf.
The field that asks “Would you like to participate in the tourney?” defaults to Yes. If you’re signing up to play in the league, don’t mess with this field. Only admins and refs who are not participating, or any other non-participants who just wish to read the site’s forums, should change that field to No.
Make sure to enter your Punkbuster-generated GUID in the proper blank. If you don’t put one in, you don’t play. No exceptions.
Location is fairly straightforward. If you’re EST, put East. If you’re CST, put Central. If you’re MST or PST, put West. If you’re anywhere else, you might have difficulty playing in this league.
For Position, put your best and/or most-commonly played position. This is for the sake of reference for the captains, so that they can try to pick an even mix of offensive, midfield and defensive players for their teams. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you HAVE to play that position all the time.
The last drop-down menu is for Captains. If you would be interested in serving as a team captain, change this to Yes. Once signups have closed (end of the night Sept. 16th) the admins will decide who the team captains will be, and notify them by email. Do not choose Yes for this unless you are certain that you are willing to make the commitment. Captains will need to prepare before the draft by looking over the entire pool of potential draftees, and trying to determine what players (both early and late in the draft) they’d like to select. Captains will also be responsible for all matters concerning their team during the season, including scheduling of matches.
Once signups close (Sept. 16th) the captains will be selected and notified shortly thereafter. The admins will gather the captains together soon after, and the draft will take place. There will be a week or so after the draft to give teams time to get together and start scrimming and working things out, and then the season will get underway.
We’ll have more information for you in a couple of weeks regarding the number of teams, team size, and season format, as those things cannot be decisively determined until we know how many people are going to sign up. Tentatively, we’re looking at 8 teams in a 7-week regular season, followed by single-elimination playoffs. Once signups have closed (Sept. 16th) we’ll finalize these details.
If you would like to help with the league as a referee, please msg an op in #q3ictf. If you have any questions about the league, or about signing up, please don’t hesitate to ask in the channel.
You have two weeks, so don’t wait. Sign up now!
