Q3iCTF Does the Draft Thing

After a few months of relative peace and quiet in the Q3iCTF community, it’s time to get things moving again, and since the all-weapons peeps had their fun with a draft league (the CTFDL) earlier this year, some of the same folks that brought you GotRail? 3 decided to try the concept out with Instagib CTF.

If you’re not familiar with a draft league, I’ll give a quick explanation of how it works. Basically, it’s exactly what the word “draft” implies….the admins select team captains, and then those team captains (in an order that will be randomly determined) draft players for their teams from the entire list of people that have signed up to play. It can be a nice change of pace from all the usual clans that play in every tourney, and allows for a bit of parity…when the season starts, any team could finish on top!

With that formality out of the way, we now present you with the Q3iCTF Draft Thing. (No, I didn’t think of the name. :D)

Starting now at this location (which will migrate to q3ictf.com as soon as the rest of the site is ready) signups have opened for all those that are interested in participating. Signups will be open until the end of the night on September 16th, 2004. If you don’t signup on the site by midnight that night, you don’t play. That gives you two weeks, so sign up now, and tell everyone you know that enjoys Q3iCTF.

Allow me to stress one thing: do NOT sign up if you will not be able or willing to be active the ENTIRE season. We’re only going to allow the league to be so big, and we would prefer not to have people taking up spots who do not wish to participate 100% of the time. Depending on how many signups there are, there will be a waiting list of people who do not get drafted, and those people, at the discretion of the team captains and admins, will be used to replace anyone on any team that is not actively participating.

A few notes about the signup form…

  • The username/handle should be the name you intend to play under…and you should also use the name you are best known by, as the captains picking the teams might overlook you if they don’t recognize your name.
  • Make sure you use a working email address when you sign up. The system will send you a confirmation email. If you don’t receive it, notify an op in #q3ictf.
  • The field that asks “Would you like to participate in the tourney?” defaults to Yes. If you’re signing up to play in the league, don’t mess with this field. Only admins and refs who are not participating, or any other non-participants who just wish to read the site’s forums, should change that field to No.
  • Make sure to enter your Punkbuster-generated GUID in the proper blank. If you don’t put one in, you don’t play. No exceptions.
  • Location is fairly straightforward. If you’re EST, put East. If you’re CST, put Central. If you’re MST or PST, put West. If you’re anywhere else, you might have difficulty playing in this league.
  • For Position, put your best and/or most-commonly played position. This is for the sake of reference for the captains, so that they can try to pick an even mix of offensive, midfield and defensive players for their teams. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you HAVE to play that position all the time.
  • The last drop-down menu is for Captains. If you would be interested in serving as a team captain, change this to Yes. Once signups have closed (end of the night Sept. 16th) the admins will decide who the team captains will be, and notify them by email. Do not choose Yes for this unless you are certain that you are willing to make the commitment. Captains will need to prepare before the draft by looking over the entire pool of potential draftees, and trying to determine what players (both early and late in the draft) they’d like to select. Captains will also be responsible for all matters concerning their team during the season, including scheduling of matches.
  • ———————————————————————————————–

Once signups close (Sept. 16th) the captains will be selected and notified shortly thereafter. The admins will gather the captains together soon after, and the draft will take place. There will be a week or so after the draft to give teams time to get together and start scrimming and working things out, and then the season will get underway.

We’ll have more information for you in a couple of weeks regarding the number of teams, team size, and season format, as those things cannot be decisively determined until we know how many people are going to sign up. Tentatively, we’re looking at 8 teams in a 7-week regular season, followed by single-elimination playoffs. Once signups have closed (Sept. 16th) we’ll finalize these details.

If you would like to help with the league as a referee, please msg an op in #q3ictf. If you have any questions about the league, or about signing up, please don’t hesitate to ask in the channel.

You have two weeks, so don’t wait. Sign up now!

    2. This looks like a lot of fun :)

Don’t know any thing about CTFDL I spent too much time under a rock ;)
How much time a week can players expect to invest?
Are we talking about 2-3 hours a week or 5 hours a day?
      Are there rules available somewhere?

      Comment by :) — 9/3/2004 @ 7:39 am

    3. How much time you invest in playing/practicing is up to you. I’m sure the captain will take into consideration the active people as their first choices..How much they want you to practice/scrim will be up to them.

I’m working on the rules this weekend and will have something finalized by next week. They will be pretty basic…Once we have everything set Requ13m will post a new article to notify everyone. Right now we’re just trying to make everyone aware and to get a head count. =)

    4. A lot of the teams in CTFDL did nothing more than show up for matches. Some teams simply didn’t participate, which is the one big issue with a draft league. There were some teams, however, that would scrim the non-draft teams for practice. It’s a very difficult league to run, but Requiem has a lot of experience with the all weaps league we ran, and as long as people don’t screw the league over by signing up and then just not playing I’m sure it will be a good time =).

    5. I believe it is also important, that the captains are well-liked people in the iCTF community. It can’t be people like TETHER, or anyone who has very little experience.

Another thing I’d like to bring attention to is the fact that people gotta commit before they know what team they’re on. Wait a second, let me explain.

What if I get on cold’s team?.. fuck I’d quit in an instant, no stoppin me

      Just my 2 worthless cents.

    6. I have a question about match schedules. I play in a tennis league and I have matches every Tuesday at 6:00. Will this league have a set schedule of what day and time matches will be played up front? Or is it a free for all schedule / play when you can?
I’m pretty busy with life right now, but if I knew I could expect to play every week at the same time I’d be a lot more likely to be able to compete.

Any thoughts on this? Good luck with the league!

    7. There will not be a set schedule. Just the weekly matches, up to the teams to schedule them.

    8. Damn. I’ve been saying ctf’s only shot was if ictf remained dead. So much for that idea. Dibs on the i told ya so’s.

      Comment by dalvian — 9/3/2004 @ 10:15 pm

    9. Why start a ictf tourney when ctfx is starting, alot of CTF peeps play ictf. Now we are going from Q3 being dead to 2 tourneys basically at once. Id wait till ctfx is over

      Comment by Easter — 9/4/2004 @ 12:24 pm

    10. We’ll see how long it takes to organize. CTFDL games didn’t start until about 2 months after the first post about it I believe.

      Comment by dynom|te — 9/4/2004 @ 12:44 pm

    11. ctfdl was a waste, for me at least, viju/cerebus/dean/daler etc quit and didn’t play so om… it was 2nd div and myself

anyways let’s see how this goes

      Comment by hossit — 9/4/2004 @ 1:01 pm

    12. I agree with the comment that easter made regarding the two tournaments at once. I know that ctfdl didnt start for like 2 months after the first post, but I think that was perhaps one of its major downfalls. I remember waiting and waiting and waiting and waiting for ctfdl to start. I just got tired of waiting and wasnt looking forward to it really anymore. It had lost its appeal at that point, and I think people had given up on putting effort into it after it took so long to start.

      Comment by whore — 9/4/2004 @ 1:41 pm

    13. I second whore’s comment. Pretty much the same shit happened to me. Waited too long, got busy by the time it was ready, doh

    14. This won’t be starting two months down the road…maybe getting the website up, cuz Vile is slow..but this is all going to happen fairly quickly. We’re not going to postpone this because of ctfx running at the same time. 64 people signed up in less then 48 hours. We won’t put them off because some of the ctfer’s can’t do both..Sign up if you can, if not then maybe this will all work out well and there will be another season. =)

      P.S. <3 Jon

    15. The point i was trying to make is #1 Being the captain of a Draft Leauge Team and getting everyone together is hard. Now mix in the fact that 1/3 of all the players are involved with another leauge thats already in progress. #2 Why put added pressure / stress on a community that has dramatically declined in the last few months. #3 Just cuz you can have a tourney dosent mean you should rush out and do it with out regard for timing … Immagine if some ass handle tried to throw some Q3 con in texas on the same dates as NERDCON err Quake con. Get my drift.

P.S. I know now most/all the admins of the draft leauge will all have a stick up their ass after this post. Its just my thougts so take a deep breath, and if you dont wanna take any of it into consideration its your tourney and i hope it goes well.

      Comment by Easter — 9/4/2004 @ 4:42 pm

    16. I agree with Easter….why start this now right when CTFX V is about to get going? If you want to help keep CTF going wait and do this after CTFx is done.. I think you would have a better chance that way for this thing to not fail.

    17. ctfx takes foooooooooooooooooorever to finish…..

      Comment by compass — 9/4/2004 @ 6:30 pm

    18. If Q3 CTF really has degraded to the point where it can’t hold ONE allweaps tourney and ONE insta tourney at (gasp!) ALMOST THE SAME TIME (omgwtfhax!) then I’d say we should just put flowers on its grave right now and move on to something else. (And “almost the same time” isn’t really 100% accurate, because CTFx will be approaching it’s halfway point by the time the Q3iCTF Draft Thing gets underway.)

There are plenty of people that will play in both without difficulty, as they have always done. There are plenty of people that only play one mod or the other, either because they don’t have time, or they don’t like one mod, or whatever. I don’t see the iCTF Draft Thing pulling people away from CTFx…it’s for the insta-only crowd, and the allweaps folks that enjoy insta as well. If it’s too much for you to handle, then don’t play in both. Pretty simple. In case you think I talk the talk without walking the walk, I will play in both leagues, serve as an admin for both leagues, still play the occasional pickup here and there, and continue to (very slowly) work my way through Doom 3, and maybe even throw in a bit of UT2K4 CTF here and there. Meanwhile, I also have a start-up computer company I’m working to get off the ground, work that I do on the side to keep the bills paid, and even something of a social life on the weekends. All that, and I STILL find the time to look this sexy. Amazing. :D

Suffice to say, I don’t really see a problem here. And as surprising as it may be to some people out there, I don’t even have a stick up my ass about it. ;)

    22. As you can see by the post of the exact same statement a day ahead of him, I agree with Easter.

It’ll just mean that some players won’t sign up for the iCTF one because well, why bother.

      Comment by dalvian — 9/6/2004 @ 4:35 pm

    23. lol you’re such a downer Dal. Just a reminder there’s 9 days left to sign up. I’m currently working on a few sponsors. So possible prizes for the winning team. =D Website should be up soon with more details…If you have any questions, find an op in #q3ictf on etg. =)

    24. The only people I see complaining are just a few and they are all weapons guys…

100 some people already signed up and they all know it will be running along side ctfx. ost not be to big of a problem. What about the people who dont want to wait like me…I dont like all weapons at all and all i play is iCTF. Why should i have to wait cause a different mod is being played…just an opinion
